In the 2021-22 school year, I will be teaching grammar to first graders for the first time in a long time. I'll also be teaching hiragana and katakana from scratch.
Katakana... It's not so easy.
Probably, in the minds of ordinary Japanese learners, the difficulty levels of Japanese characters are as follows.
hiragana << katakana <<<<<<<< kanji
The order of learning is usually the same as above. After taking a break from learning the 46 basic hiragana syllables (seion) as well as hiragana with diacritical marks (dakuon and handakuon), contracted sounds (yooon), etc., I think that katakana, which comes before the most difficult characters, kanji, tends to be taken lightly. Aside from onomatopoeia, many people don't find it that difficult because katakana is used as a Japanese notation for foreign words and they know the meaning and the pronunciation of them in the original language.
But Katakana, is it really that easy?
I think it is almost impossible to write the pronunciation of foreign words in katakana as they are. There is no choice but to arrange it quite forcibly, and sometimes, some of them end up being written in a completely different way from the sound of the original sound. Some abbreviations are not found in the original language, such as "pasokon (personal computer)" and "saboru (to cut a class)," as well as Japanese katakana words like "hocchikisu (stapler)" and "chakku (zipper)". Can you figure out the meaning of the following katakana words which many learners struggle to first?
*You will see the answer when you highlight the part behind the arrow.
ローマ →Rome コーヒー →coffee ヨーグルト →yoghurt デジカメ →digital camera ズボン →pants
I have never seen a comprehensive rule of katakana notation from the pronunciation of the original language. Therefore, I think it is almost impossible for foreign learners of Japanese to imagine katakana notation from the original language according to some rules. So how do Japanese people learn katakana notation?
Usually, in Japan, you can learn katakana by the end of the first grade of elementary school and practice writing basic katakana words. After the third grade, schoolchildren must learn more kanji, so they don't have to practice writing katakana in particular. After all, I think they learn katakana naturally by being exposed to a lot of katakana words in their studies and daily lives. This would be a difficult environment for non-native learners to realize.
I have never required students in my classroom to be able to write many katakana words correctly. Nevertheless, I think it's best to train enough to imagine the meaning of things that you usually see. For this reason, I think it is important to see as many katakana words as possible.
Judging from the learners' responses, they seem to enjoy the process of discovering the connection between the katakana words and the original language as if it were a quiz. I think there is a need for teachers to use this small awareness to make learning more enjoyable. Learners should never underestimate katakana. And please try to face a lot of katakana words as you enjoy the quiz.
